About Trust Funding
Educational trusts are charitable organisations that award grants for educational purposes. While some trusts only award grants to organisations, there are a great many in the UK that award funding to individual students.
The role of EGAS
Based on the information provided by the student in our Student Questionnaire
EGAS supplies information to students on educational trusts to which they
are eligible to apply. Print a copy of our Student
Questionnaire and send it to EGAS at 501-505 Kingsland Road, London
E8 4AU.
EGAS aims to ensure information on criteria, eligibility and deadlines are accurate. If a student finds that the information supplied by EGAS is no longer accurate please let the service know so we can amend our records.
It is important to remember that EGAS is merely an advisory service and has no influence or control over a trust's decision in respect of applications nor do we make applications to trusts on behalf of individuals.
Who do trusts assist?
The criteria for eligibility set by trusts are extremely diverse. Most trusts make relatively small awards to assist students with specific needs associated with their ability to study, which are not met or fully met from other sources, such as childcare, books and equipment or travel expenses. Some trusts are prepared to sponsor students throughout the duration of a course, however this is extremely rare.
Many trusts have a limited remit such as only assisting study leading to a particular profession; study at a specific academic level; those living in or originating from a specific geographical area; falling within a specific age range or those of a specified religion.
Students for which it is difficult to identify trust funding
In our experience it is more difficult to identify funding in the following areas:
- Second undergraduate degree courses. The majority of trusts are not willing to consider applications from students undertaking second degrees, even if they did not complete their first degree, unless the second qualification is in a specific subject area such as medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.
- Postgraduate courses. Most funding is subject-specific, often linked to particular vocations such as law or medicine. It is extremely difficult to secure funding for general humanities courses or courses with no direct vocational link.
- Overseas students. It is particularly difficult to secure funding for overseas students in the UK. As a rule trusts expect overseas students to have identified sufficient funding before embarking on their course of study.
- Asylum Seekers. It is exceptionally difficult to identify funding for asylum seekers as available funding is both limited and over-subscribed.
How to apply to trusts
The procedure for applying to trusts differs widely although most trusts
require either a letter or application form. If there is no clear guidance
in the trust information supplied by EGAS, the student should write to
the trust detailing the type of funding required, their personal circumstances
and academic background, including relevant supporting evidence.
Before applying to a trust ALWAYS check eligibility criteria. The vast
majority of trusts require an applicant to meet "qualifying" criteria
which might be specific to one or more of the following: age, sex, religion,
subject of study, country of births, parents occupation etc. It is a waste
of both the applicant's and the trust's time if inappropriate applications
are submitted.
When to apply to trusts
Most trusts have specific opening periods with deadlines for receipt of
application. It is important to follow the guidance in the trust information
supplied by EGAS.
Trusts can seldom help with an immediate financial crisis. Generally speaking,
the longer one has to raise to raise the funds needed, the better.
